Merry Karnowsky Gallery proudly presents Los Angeles based artist, Kent Williams’ most recent work. Applying his distinctive draftsmanship and painterly breadth, Williams continues to investigate the direct portrayal of human physiognomy and character. Presenting us with paintings that show us both, the figure in states of quiet observation, as well as in full-blown struggles, Williams oscillates between how he portrays the contradictions posed by common existential realities. Like a vivisection of sorts, the figures in Williams’ canvases are often taken apart and physically fragmented by their surroundings. The intercut sections of the human body within Williams‘ turbid abstracted backgrounds, suggests that this atmospheric mien is a proposal on how one’s own environment plays a role in the stability of one’s emotional life. This observance reveals life as a series of changes, brought on at times, by personal choices and at other times, external ones but always compounded with the force these changes have on one’s daily life and perspective. This necessarily human condition creates unforeseeable turbulence in the inner and outer lives of Williams’ beleaguered figures. Whether it‘s etched upon the faces of his subjects or shown through the shards of their fractaling selves, the inherent psychology of this kind of struggle is all in the paint and portrayal of the figures and the spaces they occupy. A portrayal that reveals just how fragile our situations really are. Situations that are deftly expressed in Williams’ sympathetic hands.
Williams also continues his exploration of various materials, incorporating within his newest works altered multiples. A combination of silkscreen, oil and resin works, both on canvas and paper.
Kent Williams’ work has been the subject of a number of solo exhibitions over the past ten years, including shows in New York City, San Francisco, CA, Sundance, UT, The Duke Museum of Art, Durham, NC, and Los Angeles, CA. His painting was exhibited at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC as part of THE OUTWIN BOOCHEVER 2006 PORTRAIT EXHIBITION. His work is collected both in the US and abroad and is included in the collections of Robin Williams, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, Darren Aronofsky, and Meg White.
